New York Governor Andrew Cuomo pardons dozens of prisoners just before the new year.
At least 18 of the 61 pardons were for illegal immigrants, blocking federal officials from deporting those individuals.
Among the others receiving clemency include a convicted murderer, drug dealers, and others found guilty of violent offenses.
Cuomo’s reasoning for pardoning the criminals was reportedly based on their rehabilitation efforts, and were serving time for what he considers to be “low-level offenses.”
The pardons come amid criticisms that New York has been lax on immigration-related crimes, leading to the resurgence of the MS-13 gang.
