To the editor:
Recently the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that it is unlawful for police to keep an undocumented immigrant in custody on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unless the person has committed a violent crime. The court’s ruling gives at least partial support for sanctuary cities (or states), in which state and local law enforcement agencies cannot be used in efforts to deport people.

It hasn’t taken much time for people to join sides over this issue. Some people fear that being a sanctuary state would endanger Massachusetts residents. Much to the contrary, though, many police departments urge support of the Safe Communities Act (not in front of our Legislature) — which would prevent state and local police from detaining immigrants
