CHARLOTTE, NC — Local immigrant advocacy groups are pressuring Charlotte city and county officials to defy federal immigration laws that lead to arrest and deportation of undocumented immigrants. The three groups — Comunidad Colectiva, Southeast Asian Coalition nd Alerta Migratoria — delivered a list of demands to city officials Wednesday aimed at protecting the rights of the estimated 54,000 undocumented immigrants in the Charlotte area, The Charlotte Observer reported.
“We are members of your community and we are your constituents,” the groups said in an open letter to the mayor, city council, police department, city manager, city attorney, Mecklenburg County commissioners and the county’s sheriff. “We are here to demand from you protection and safety for our communities.”

The groups’ demands, according to the newspaper, included:
Stop complying with the federal 287(g) program, which requires prisoners answer questions about their citizenship status when taken to a county jail Delete citizenship questions
