Re “For the Undocumented, a Broken Headlight Can Lead to Deportation” (news article, July 19): States help promote public safety by allowing undocumented immigrants access to driver’s licenses. Law enforcement should be condemned for treating these drivers differently merely because of their undocumented status.
By failing to maintain policies that ensure their ability to communicate with crime victims, drivers or suspects regardless of language, many police departments fall into the disturbing practice of relying on Border Patrol agents to serve as interpreters and translators.
This practice exposes non-English-speaking communities to the risk of escalation of a simple traffic stop into an interrogation regarding citizenship status and potential detention or deportation.
It’s time for law enforcement agencies to focus on language-access policies, like bilingual officers
