DEPLETION of fishing stocks in the South China Sea is forcing illegal Vietnamese fishing boats to target the Coral Sea and the rich fishing grounds off Mackay.
All of the boats caught recently in the Coral Sea were fishing for sea cucumber and were from the one port in central Vietnam, Sa Ky Port in the Quang Ngai Province

Australian Fisheries Management Authority’s (AFMA) general manager operations Peter Venslovas said the fishermen who travelled to the Coral Sea to harvest sea cucumbers were “treated like heroes” at home.
“It because they go so far and the money they get, they are seen as heroes in their own country,” Mr Venslovas said.
He said raw sea cucumber straight from the boats fetched between $10 and $20
