Even before Donald Trump officially took office, his influence made illegal immigration begin to fall. In October 2016, there were 20,531 people presenting themselves at ports of entry at the Southwest Border that were deemed inadmissible. By November, that number dropped to 16,155, and in December, it fell further to 15,226.

Admittedly, it wouldn’t have been irrational to expect a surge in illegal border crossings following Trump’s victory, with illegals trying to cross the border before a wall is built. On the other hand, a fear of vigorous immigration enforcement could be the deterrent responsible for the decline.
And of course, when Trump took office, the crossings fell even further. In January, there was a 42 percent drop in family unit apprehensions, a 39 percent decline in unaccompanied minors apprehended, and a 27 percent decrease overall. And it hasn’t slowed down since.
