GREENFIELD — At a packed meeting following three hours of public comment, a proposal to declare Greenfield a “safe city” for undocumented immigrants was defeated 6-4 by the Town Council.
Wednesday’s vote came despite the fact that Mayor William Martin last month issued an executive order prohibiting local police from working with federal immigration officials without his permission.

“The mayor’s executive order is sufficient on this,” said one councilor.
After the vote was taken, members of the public started shouting “shame” at the councilors, reports the Greenfield Recorder.
The ordinance would have prohibited town employees, including police, from performing the functions of an immigration officer, to the extent permissible by law. The proposal had been under discussion for months at the subcommittee level.
