In 2013, California made it possible for nearly a million undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses. The bill didn’t pass without controversy, as anti-immigration activists argued making it easier for undocumented immigrants to drive would make roads less safe. But now a new study has found just the opposite. It turns out people are far less likely to flee the scene of an accident when their first thought isn’t the fear of getting deported.
Under the new law, police were legally prohibited from discriminating against holders of the special licenses or reporting their immigration status. Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at Stanford University’s Immigration Policy Lab found that the number of road accidents and fatalities remained unchanged in 2015 after the law went into effect and some 600,000 people obtained new driver’s licenses under it.
