The Department of Home Affairs DG Apleni has called Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba to quit making discriminatory comments about foreign nationals living in the city.
This comes after the controversial DA leader said the city would build housing for South Africans, but won’t provide free housing to foreign nationals.

Apleni condemned Mashaba’s comments, saying that “Statements like that promote these issues of xenophobia because we make statements like that trying to differentiate people.”
The Home Affairs boss also used the opportunity to address a disturbing claim that the department had told the city of Johannesburg to stop arresting more illegal immigrants due to overcrowding in prisons.
He said the claim does not make sense
