BRIDGEPORT – In an effort to end the impasse over designating Bridgeport a “sanctuary city” for undocumented immigrants, proponents have released a stripped down version of their original proposal.
Among the changes? Nowhere in the one page document is the term “sanctuary city” used.

“The mayor doesn’t like that word,” said Councilman Jose Casco. “If I add ‘sanctuary city’ it’s not going to be passed.”
In response to Republican President Donald Trump’s controversial crackdown on undocumented residents, Casco and other council members over the winter proposed following Hartford, New Haven, New York, San Francisco and other out-of-state municipalities in adopting policies restricting local cooperation with federal deportations.
But despite the fact all 20 council members and Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim are Democrats, support for the sanctuary designation was not unanimous. In fact Ganim and his staff worked behind-the-scenes to kill the idea in the face of threats from the Trump
